Congratulations! (or blush, Debi, blush!)

Another day, another triumph.

Following the Festival of Writing, Roger Hardy has been taken on by Peter Buckman of the Ampersand Agency. I know Peter well, and he's a top bloke, a top agent.

Monster congrats to Roger, and I hope he snares a monster deal sometime soon.

But congrats too to Roger and Debi (his editor of a many a year) for a different reason. This isn't Roger's first book; far from it. He's used a series of books to hone his craft, and each time he's got better, and each time he's used tough advice from Debi to get himself in shape.

If I'm honest, when we first started working with Roger, I didn't think he'd make it. And now he has. And he has done because he's gone about this in absolutely the right way - and it hasn't hurt that he's been working with one of our most gifted & generous editors. So major monster aerial congrats to all. Oh, and do read Debi's post of a year back about all these things.

I can't begin to tell you how good this feels. So I won't. But it does. A lot.

Except it's more than that, much more. Go, Roger!

Congratulations Roger! I think I've seen you on here a few times, but not often. Well done!

And, Congratulations Debi. I'm not sure if this is something you hinted about in an activity stream I was involved in a few months back (I sounded really important then), but I wondered what the outcome would be if so!

Many well done's on an excellent job to you both x

Perseverance and triumph wins out again.
    Congrats to you both.

Knowing this site provides the support they've always claimed they give, it's great to see the continued run of success of writers and inspires me to continue.

Once again, Roger and Debbie, new to the business or not, still an achievement.
    well done

Omigod....five in the morning and couldn't sleep on this, the longest day. I just found this stream of comments and am completely bowled over. Thank you all so much and massive thanks to Debi for being such a wonderful mentor; this would never have happened without her. I guess matters are a little out of my hands at the moment and this is all new to me so I await developments with interest. the wonderful thing is that a few months ago I decided to take early retirement to concentrate on writing and that's in 5 weeks, so the timing is rather good, to say the least! Now, I have to start thinking about a sequel.....

That's great news and an inspirational story. Congratulations Roger for working so hard to get it right - and for Debi to have pushed you all the way to a contract. Good editors are unsung heroes /heroines and blushes are quite in order, Debi.

Really great news, Roger - I see you've written a whole bookcase of books already! Which one is the contract for, or is it for more than one? 'Scuse the nosiness...

It's the one I just finished, called 'Flight Into Darkness'. It's the first post-Bin Laden novel....actually I started it last July but it was easy to modify as the Arab Spring developed. I'm told that not getting a bite until Book 6 is not unusual; I think that was EmmaD's experience as well. Roger Ellory wrote about two dozen! Talk of a contract is premature, unfortunatetly. but it's being touted around the publishing houses. The genre is ferociously competitive and the existing competition is pretty stiff, so I'm not counting my chickens just yet. Fingers still crossed.

Sorry, I meant the contract with the agent. Wishing you all the very best in getting a publisher - and I have to say, your timing is just brilliant with the early retirement!

Sometimes, the universe seems to be onside and the planets are all in alignment - or whatever it takes to make things come together in this way and with such excellent timing. Mostly though, it takes hard work, persistance, a rhino hide for dealing with rejection, a stubborn streak a mile wide, an ability and willingness to learn, a vivid imagination and the irresistible compulsion to tell stories. These Roger has by the bucketload.

It is indeed vital not to count chickens, (unless you're Whisks) and we all know it is another matter for Peter to persuade publishers of the commercial potential of this book. But it's so important to celebrate such a maassive step forwards. And it really is a Very Good Book, believe me!

Let's not forget Debi's comment: 'but most of the time he has derived wonderful satisfaction from the creative process.'
I think this is key. If that satisfaction isn't there, how can you succeed?
Well done Roger, and keep enjoying the music.
