Hi,  i'm thinking about signing up to a mentoring scheme, i was wondering if anyone one had any experience of these, were they worth the money? Did their writing improve? Did it lead to publication etc.
Thanks.

I have no experience of mentoring, but if you go ahead, please let us know how you got on. It would be interesting to find out what a mentor actually does.

I have mentored a couple of authors. It's a huge commitment as it's an ongoing process to their writing career as opposed to critiquing a single completed novel. The form it takes can vary according to the needs of the author. For one, for example, she sent me her WIP in 10,000 word chunks and I gave her feedback on the novel as it developed.

With authors like our very own Roger, I've been his editor for 6 books, some for several reads. So though I'm not formally mentoring him as such, in practice, the role has been more like that of a mentor as we have lots of discussions in between critiques of his completed MSes. As an editor, it's very satisfying. Especially when you get news like Roger's recent signing by agent, Peter Buckman.
