I really enjoyed reading this post, Skylark, despite the news about your poor mother in law. Many congratulations.

Athelstone You can PM anybody if you click on their name and PM via their profile. From your own profile's messages link you can create a message and there's a drop down list box that auto-completes with friends as you type a name. It doesn't work very well, sometimes missing out matching-names unless you enter quite a few letters, but it does allow you to send one PM to many people. You can also do mass PMs as a group owner.

Athelstone When I was making a list of people to remind about the short story challenge I found quite a few people I've known for years and who I assumed were friends already.

John Taylor Yes, friends on here doesn't really have a point, does it? It's not like Facebook, where it determines who you are in touch with. I've no idea who I'm 'friends' with on here.

Daedalus Am I right in thinking you can only PM someone you're friends with? Or am I getting that mixed up with another site?

Yes, I've been given that advice by various people, but also been given the exact opposite advice by others. Agents are all different and have different approaches, things they want a cover letter to include and things they don't and likes/pet-hates ...

Thank you :-) I've always found genre tricky. I'm still not sure entirely what my genre is though reading group fiction has been mentioned a few times. Domestic-noir is one of my favourite reading genres :-)

Do dream, and keep heading for your dream. I had over a decade of near misses and my book is being published next year. Definitely mention your comp entries because being shortlisted/longlisted in any competition is an excellent achievement. I'm not ...
