Being a Misfit

Recently I really got into the E4 Drama "Misfits". I'd wanted to watch it since it was first out, but never got round to it -- until now. This may perhaps sound silly, but it has changed my perspective on things.

For those of you who don't know, it's about five teens doing community service, who get struck by a freak storm and develop super powers. It is incredibly funny, and to me, it opened my eyes to characters not being perfect.

Sounds obvious, I know, but to me it reminded me that as a human being, I make mistakes, everyone does - including the people that I write about and create.

It made it okay that the world isn't one big perfect creation.

If oysters didn't have awkward itchy grains of sand to deal with, there would be no pearls. Or, to put it another way, perfect is BORING!

Liss, you have learned something special. We are not perfect and were
never meant to be so. If we were born perfect there would be nothing
    left to strive for.

    Merry Christmas, xx

John - and the pearl benefits the oyster how, exactly?
One man's itch is another man's pearl? Could probably make a case for that.
Sorry Geri - didn't mean to hijack your thread. I've never seen Misfits. But I agree with your sentiments - a little bit of good, a little bit of bad - we're all made of it and so are compelling characters - they're the ones I like to read about, anyway. It makes way for a transformation, a redemption, a new understanding.
Stopping now before I get maudlin.

Gah! Liss. LISS. L-I-S-S. Sigh. Will you please stop impersonating Geri? Thank you.
P.S. Knew I should have stopped.

Whisks - the pearl benefits the oyster by soothing an unbearable itch. What man makes of the pearl
is his own unbearable itch. Go figure.

And what has all this to do with Gerilyn? Looks as if you're celebrating Christmas a little early.
Nothing wrong with that, m'Dear. Merry Christmas :-)

I've never seen it, but love the sentiment in your blog, Liss.

I know quite a few real life misfits (although they don't have super powers.)

They're far from perfect and don't always seem to know where they belong, exactly! The good thing about them is, they don't judge. They accept people for who they are, warts and all. I find it's normally the people who think they're perfect that tend to point fingers. Not being perfect and accepting that is less of a flaw than trying to be, or believing that you are perfect, to my mind!

Merry Misfit Christmas and A Doing Things Your Way New Year, Liss x

My kids introduced me to Misfits yesterday and I watched the whole first series. Love it! I like the way there's no attempt to clarify how the storm caused the mutations. It's merely a device, and unashamedly so; you just have to accept it. And agree re the characters still being compelling - even lovable - even though they're flawed. Key here is that you can't help caring about what happens to them. And the other thing is that it straddles almost every genre: sci-fi/fantasy, thriller, comedy, romance ... Excellent casting too.
