There's a problem with 'privileges' here?

Published by: EleanorW on 28th Jan 2012 | View all blogs by EleanorW
Hi

I'm stunned by what I can and cannot do on this website, particularly in relation to my own stuff.

To summarise :

1. In a topic which I begin, I can edit the first post whenever I like.  (Fine - I have no problem with that).

2. In the same topic, I can Delete not only my own posts, but those made by other people! (This is appalling - I shouldn't be able to delete other people's posts, even if I did start the topic.)

3. In topics that others have started, I cannot edit or remove my own posts, not even in a brief 'window', e.g. up to 15 minutes after posting. (This is also bad - I should be able to edit my posts or even delete them).

In all other forums you can edit yourself, even if they only give you a brief period of time in which to do this. Popular sites like Facebook and Twitter allow you to delete your own posts whenever you want. Nowhere else do I have the power to delete posts made by other people.

Are other people shocked by this? I'd be interested to hear a variety of views, especially from Word Cloud moderators who could explain their thinking on this?

HI Eleanor, it's good this edit function in blogs.
It means I can now say 'Doh! Sorry...didn't understand you were talking about forum posts.'

I cannot pretend to understand all of the problems you are experiencing, Eleanor. In my experience, however, I have, if I deem necessary, been able to delete posts on blogs begun by others.

Odd things do happen at times. Once, I had to ask the moderators for help as my wall went into some sort of time-warp! It had to be deleted manually and I then re-registered.

Might be worth messaging the 'Word Cloud' profile directly.

How do you both manage to edit/delete your posts? All i have is two QUOTE buttons - one is "Quote to Topic" (I have no idea what that does) and the other is to quote a post when replying to it. There is no Edit button, except at the very top of topics I start myself.

By the way - I DO have an edit button in the Blog, I'm using it right now!! But not in the Critiques forum where I spend most of my time.

you can't delete comments you have made on the forum Eleanor, but you can on blogs. Just go to a blog you have commented on - there should be a little x giving you the option to delete.

Noodle - I've just discovered I can edit on the Blog, but that doesn't matter to me. I spend most of my time in the Critiques forum, and I can't edit there.

Oh, okay. Why would you want to?

Sorry, Eleanor, I thought you were referring to blogs. Noodledoodle is correct about not being able to delete in the critiques forum. No idea why. Experimented with the Quote button once and it came up with a separate forum topic, but one connected to the original. That was not what I had expected it to do.

Another little foible! I altered my error - typo: second 'forum'. It has taken here, but not on front page posting. Oh well.

I want to be able to either edit a post which I made in haste, or delete it altogether. Sometimes I'm not happy with something I said or how I said it, and want to change it.

mmm, yes, I guess we've all been 'stung' with that one, me probably more than most but at the moment there really is bugger all we can do about it :-)

As this is a Social Go site the settings are probably just there. The other SG site I belonged to worked in exactly the same way.

It's a bit annoying that if there's a typo then it has to stay. Saying that, it's only a comment on someone else's work, so it shouldn't matter really.

As for deleting other peoples' comments on your own work, that would be a bit silly as they're there to offer guidance. If I commented and it was removed, I wouldn't bother commenting again, so it's not likely to keep happening.

I'm not sure why sometimes we can and other times we can't but it doesn't really bother me. If I were to delete someone's comment I'd simply expect them to not bother helping me again.

Just read your comment Eleanor. I too have worded something then thought 'that's not how I meant it to sound,' so in that case a quick note underneath saying 'oops... etc' would be okay. It doesn't always come out as it should, or I've gotten the wrong end of the stick then realised afterward that I've got it all wrong!

    EleanorW,
If we have initiated the Forum topic, then we had the option to edit our original text or to delete the whole topic, which includes everyon's comments, but (and I'm pretty sure I'm remembering correctly; others will put me right, if I'm not) we didn't used to be able to delete even our own subsequent comments, let alone anyone else's. This is a new feature to me - at least I hadn't noticed it before - and I'd agree with you, we shouldn't have the ability to delete another's comment. If it is new, as I think, it seems to have been an attempt to redress the situation where we couldn't edit or delete our own comments and the programmers has misinterpreted what they were asked to do.

Thanks for pointing it out. I hope the Cloud techies see this and take action.

That's interesting Tony. That sounds like the best explanation. Yes, I do hope they read this and act on it!

Oh, I've just read Minxie's post above - it's a property of the forum software? I hadn't realised there were other forums that work the same way. (That's not to say it isn't a totally rubbish way!)

So is it wrong of me to delete my own posts in critiques once interest has waned on the subject? I do it so as not to take up space with out-od-date stuff...but by doing that, I'm deleting other people's comments from here (though saving them for my own reference), which I think is what you're saying we shouldn't be able to do?

Deleting your whole post when it is no longer active (or, occasionally if it becomes rather too active and accriomonious) is fine. I took it that what Eleanor was reffering to was the ability (which I think is a recent addition) to for you be able to selectively delete other people's comments on your topic thread while it is still active.

I meant selective deleting too. I have deleted some of my own work after taking onboard the comments - there's nothing at all wrong with doing that.

I'm not sure if it is because it's a Social Go site, but I just assumed that they all operate the same way and the owner signs up to that format? I'm not sure if they can be customised or not so I could be wrong?

I think you must be right Minxie - it must be in the software. I'm not bothered about deleting my posts unless I need to take down work to enter into competitions. But I'm bothered that I have the power to delete others' posts in my topics, and that I no power over my own posts in others' topics. Seems cockeyed, somehow.
