Yo I did a lot of self-discovery in my teens. My mum said I'd go blind but so-far, so-good, although I do need reading specs these days.

sirtanicmills I'd also say that most writers don't offer very much to the world. Indeed, the world doesn't see much of what is written.

Yo David, it was a simple answer to your question "Why would anybody write..." Some people will write just to make a buck, especially celebs desperately trying to crank up their fading careers. Many of them won't be doing it to offer what they've found to the world, they'll be doing it to make a buck.

Yo @David, well certainly those who are in it just for the money may nothing is important, valuable or serious other than the money. But let's not forget that many people are desperate for money, not just those who are in desperate need but those who are desperate to maintain the standard of living they've become accustomed to. @Barb - Lol

David I don't see what masturbation and celebrity cash-ins have to do with the general work of a writer. You seem to have hijacked this thread, Yo, to make some frivolous point.

Yes, I think that banning a book is acknowledging that it has 'hit a nerve' within society and that once it is re-instated, so to speak, it occasionally becomes influential, as that brief list shows.

"David" commented on SecretSpi's Blog "Burned, bombed and banned books".
Anselm Kiefer has a pretty dark approach to Germany's response to World War II; his work expresses horror and grief. Parthenon, that you're talking about, seems to be more hopeful, suggesting that there is a future. I was surprised at the books ...

About

Worked as a professional journalist for most of the 00s. Then moved into scriptwriting. I had a radio play and a short film produced, and was working on a pilot for a tv series when I decided to focus on my novel. (samples of my writing: http://writing-community.writersworkshop.co.uk/forum/topic/15994; http://writing-community.writersworkshop.co.uk/forum/topic/16225; http://writing-community.writersworkshop.co.uk/forum/topic/16312 http://writing-community.writersworkshop.co.uk/forum/topic/13589)

In the past I've also spent time as a musician. I played bass guitar in a few embarrassingly-named bands down the years: UGE, X-Amount, The Zens and Allandale.
