Oh Lou, sounds amazing! Out of interest, are you able to let it go? Do you still wake in the night thinking 'maybe it would be better if I changed...' I know with a painting that once I've sold it (and only then) that it must be finished! Also, ...

The analogies are true - in art as well. Sometimes it's snobbery but often bad art / music / script / acting is just a culmination of where the right connections can get you. I've decided to hunker down and write / paint what I really want to. If ...

Lovely analogy, Jill, thank you for sharing it with me! I suppose that's the fear, that the roots aren't strong enough and they fly away... But I feel better about it all today so thank you for the support.

Just thought of a saying that some wise person once expressed ~ 'We have to give our children roots and wings.' So true and I guess that the stronger the roots the more expansive are the wings. But, yes, letting go is never easy! :)

Thanks, Hil - like the speech bubble! Third grandchild? Wow, but you don't look old enough! Love the way you've put it, Bren - more impressive as you have a virus! Freedom and closeness, I will keep that in mind, thank you so much.

Lee this is a beautiful poem. Dramatic and full of emotion. It made me cry. I had guessed your daughter was older. When children go to sec school they draw away but only because they are certain in your presence. However they push and pull needing ...

Ele, I'm sure there are and always will be times when your no-longer-little girl wants to be your girl. Yes, the relationship needs to grow and develop, and in a way there is loss, which you express so beautifully, but there are also gains. I have ...

Oh, Jill, I can imagine, with knowledge, each passing stage is even more poignant. I feel that even now. My youngest still holds my hand to school and every time he does I wonder if it will be the last time. Awful to live backwards, if you get ...

I agree, this is a beautiful poem, Ele, and one which resonates... Grandson, now almost 3 ~ and I'm feeling the growth, pride and losses of those times all over again, whilst still cherishing each precious stage... :)

You are proof it can be the same for dad's, bazbaron! My husband doesn't seem to over-think / over-feel the way I do but at least one of us holds onto some perspective. I realise in a way, Mike had got the poem - not death but most definitely ...

Not angry at all, Minxie! Wise. I said I wasn't a poet, Mike!! I was trying to describe the unknown 'outside world'. When little, you (as a parent) have control of how far your children venture and you're always close then suddenly they're not ...

About

Having had scenes revolving around my head for about a year, I decided enough was enough and I should try and write them down. Somehow, from somewhere, I found I couldn't stop writing and before long I had a story, part autobiography, part fiction.
Over this past year, I've tried and tried to turn that story into my first novel, bordering on madness several times, at other times euphoric, believing I'd 'got it'. But I never quite have. That's when I joined the Cloud.
After some excellent advice, I set aside what was becoming tortuous and began instead to write other things. Noticing the competitions on the 'upcoming events' on here, I submitted a short story to the Mslexia comp and then a piece of flash fiction and a short story to the Bridport Prize.
My writing still requires a fair degree of polishing, but I have at least found some way of writing out what I cannot paint.

End of March sometime - I'm not doing it but got sent this newletter email thing, which of course reminded me that it was that time of year again. Dust huh?! sounds bad and hard work but I'm still sure it will be worth it. When do you think it will be done??

Aw thanks Jen! No idea about Mslexia. All the dust from the house is settled in my brain like mizzle. When is the deadline?

Ele! I've missed you - glad you are back on the cloud! So the cottage work is going well. It will be worth it. Sorry about your computor. Turns out January was not a good month for weather or technology! my naughty laptop is still in the village shop - this is a desktop we have dug out the garage. It is barely functioning and everything takes an age but at least I'm able to get the internet so that's something! So I'm just going to come out and ask - msylexia - yay or nay for this year?

Ele - how are you? ok, so the big news is my love affair with the short story is well and truely over - and not even a place on a long list to show for it!! I'm going to try to put in 30 pages of a novel (yet to be written, you know I love the power of an approching deadline!) for the Lucy Cavendish prize instead... and then I'll be well on my way to have something to go to the FOW with next year - no way am I missing out again! hope the writing is going well for you :) x

Hi Ele - this is the link to the service from Writers' Workshop - who run the Cloud. http://www.writersworkshop.co.uk/writing-feedback.html Yes, I do freelance editing for them and have done for about 7 years so it goes without saying that I think they're fab. It IS a lot of money - and there are other consultancies though the charges don't vary by much. (It takes several days to read an MS and write a report - then there are the conversations afterwards ...) WW also offer a quick feedback service on an extract. Details at the critiques tab at the top of the screen. Or you might consider a course, which would cost less but would hopefully give you the tools to see your own writing with a fresh eye and know how to improve it. Check the courses tab. WW also have free advice (see tab) and the Cloud is another free place for getting a critique. Many people have found these very useful though, as I said on your other thread, this isn't the same as professional feedback. Having said that, many of the Cloudies are very astute and give excellent feedback. Good luck!

Always put Eurythmics on when I need a good harmonising session! My mum used to tell me off for not singing in tune...but I remember days in our shared kitchen (2B or not 2B - that was the kitchen!) in Randall Lines, singing with two other friends, all taking a different line and belting the songs out!

So glad 'little Ele' enjoyed her first day. Yes, thanks, my granddaughter had a good time, too. She seems to have gone around with two or three other girls - safety in numbers.
