Writing for a specific audience

I had an idea, a while back, to write the story of our guinea pigs - bear with me! - and give a copy to each of my children as a kind of exaggerated memoir.  I've not written for children before and have just begun.  I'm experimenting with little illustrations too.  It's not up to Anna Sewell(!) by any stretch but it's really nice to write for an interested audience about a story they want to hear.  I think that's what you're meant to do as a rule, have an audience in mind and write for them.  I realise the point now!

I'm sure they are going to appreciate the story very much and the illustrations.

I was a playgroup leader at one point, aeons ago, and had to write a children's story to help gain the qualifying certificate. My audience were the playgroup children, of course, which included my own son. He loved it and that was praise I shall never forget! :)

Did you keep a copy of the story? I know I'm saying something most people know already, but I've tended to write for myself and no audience in mind. This story has been so lovely to do. Of course, my children are still young enough to think anything my husband and I do is great, which will change! But for now, I'm enjoying their enthusiasm!

Hello Ele - thanks for the friend request, duly accepted! Unfortunately, I did not keep the story, which must have been written about 34/35 years ago!! Gulp - how time flies! It was about a child being unhappy because of a house move with his family, but being thrilled to find a puppy waiting for him at the new house to help him settle in. Seemed an appropriate topic, as we moved around quite a bit at that time, but my son had to make to with hamsters! :)

Great that you are enjoying your story so much and enjoy the enthusiasm! It might change, but then again, it might not. My son is still admiring of many of my achievements, whilst probably disapproving of other things I do.... :)

Ele, love the idea of a guinea pig tale - our two - Iggy and Rico - while ostensibly not leading the most intesting lives - eat carrot for a bit, sit in the tunnel for a bit, look a bit vacant- are endlessly fascinating to my son who makes up whole interior monologues for them. Watership Down pah! Guinea pigs are the way to go...

They are entertaining creatures, Scheherazade, despite their propensity for behaving like statues! The guineas I'm writing about ran free range in our garden for a year, until one got taken by a bird? Cat? What a tale to tell!
That's lovely, Jill, that your son still admires you - and good too that you do things of which he disapproves!!

Teens rebel against their parents, so why shouldn't parents rebel against their grown offspring, whilst still admiring their talents etc greatly!! :) Have a wee grandson now, so I'm back to being admired unconditionally. Great times.
