Tony How about, 'The thread lengthened adverbially'? That's not a sentence (or a word) you often see.

Bric Sturdy is good when discussing walking boots, not so great for describing people.

Tony At last he was satisfied with his descriptions of his protagonist smiling enigmatically, sardonically and wistfully. It had been a hard slog, but he'd cracked it. He closed his laptop, smiling happily.

Mat I don't like dark shadows so much. Also any mention of tendrils in CW I throw the book in the re-cycling, same goes for 'like a marionette...'

RichardB Worst one I've seen (in a published book, mind you) was '...she enquired interestedly.' Leaving aside the ugliness, or even dubious existence, of that adverb, why else would she have enquired, or even asked?

I always enjoy your stories, Richard, and this one was as absorbing as I expected it to be. You have a real gift for explaining enough of the technical stuff for us to follow and understand the story. Great stuff.

Perfectly. What great source of conflict! Watching it going on around her and despising it for being false and then wondering if there might be some truth in it.

Hi Squidge. Interesting post and brilliant comments. I think when you know what your character needs over all and what she wants both overall and specifically in each scene, it infuses the writing and brings it to life - much like Philippa says. ...

Raine - I don't know how you managed to pick yourself after such a rotten thing to happen. All power to you! It must surely be only a questions of time before another agent comes along.

^^D Aww, shucks - thanks! I've just invited you to the new DS group (although the new opening chapters are there, they are a bit of a mess as they are the WIPs... sorry about that!). I ended up cutting around 10,000 words just out of the first 7 chapters. Amazing what you think you need, then after leaving it for 6 months, you discover you just don't... O_o

Jane - thank you so much. One thing that has made all of this so much easier to deal with is the support of lovely Cloudies like you :-) xx A facebook friend of mine also said that this particular agent is one of the biggies, and so he probably only takes on one or two new clients on a year, which kind of put it all in perspective. I think I might try a few more agents with this new version (which is far better than the version you read!!) and then if I still have no luck, try some small presses. After all, it's not as if I haven't had luck with those in the past! ^^p xxxxx
