Great blog, Squidge and great discussion. Like many of you there are books I read as a child and teenager whose attitudes towards race and gender horrify me. No, I don’t think we should rewrite history or censor books because they put forward ...

JB It's looking a bit bleak, I think they'll have to demolish and build a replica. The original and new drawings from the restoration are available so they'll be able to do this.

Seagreen Devastating. For it to happen the first time was bad enough but again? After all that hard work? And worse this time, I believe.

JB It does look worse this time, last time the structure wasn't damaged so easier to refurbish. So sad, it was a stunning building.

Sandra So shocking to wake up to the news - we were in Glasgow, on Argyll street opposite the Kelvingrove museum and didn't hear a thing. No sirens even though I was still awake at the time it started. Sad and devastating.

Janeshuff 'A pair of large feet stand...' or 'A pair of large feet stands ...'. I think the second one is correct but it sounds wrong???

Gerry I think we instinctively translate 'a pair of' as 'two'. 'Two large feet stand' would be correct, so by analogy, we at least accept 'a pair of large feet stand'.

Gerry Further thought: if we're concentrating on the number of feet, then 'stand' sounds right. If we're concentrating on them as a pair - looking identical, dressed in bovver boots, whatever - thne 'stands' would feel better.

Caducean Whisks 'Stands' since a pair is singular. But you could save yourself the angst and change it to 'Two feet stand'.

Hil I did just that, Janeshuff, and I did get my first draft wriiten and it is rubbish, but I think I needed to do it in order to free myself up to rewrite! If that makes sense. Think I'll do a better outline next time though. Anyway, keep going, and good luck!

^^D Aww, shucks - thanks! I've just invited you to the new DS group (although the new opening chapters are there, they are a bit of a mess as they are the WIPs... sorry about that!). I ended up cutting around 10,000 words just out of the first 7 chapters. Amazing what you think you need, then after leaving it for 6 months, you discover you just don't... O_o

Jane - thank you so much. One thing that has made all of this so much easier to deal with is the support of lovely Cloudies like you :-) xx A facebook friend of mine also said that this particular agent is one of the biggies, and so he probably only takes on one or two new clients on a year, which kind of put it all in perspective. I think I might try a few more agents with this new version (which is far better than the version you read!!) and then if I still have no luck, try some small presses. After all, it's not as if I haven't had luck with those in the past! ^^p xxxxx
