I had a friend at school whose last name was Kurtain. She was pregnant in high school and decided to call her daughter Annette. Like that kids not getting bullied. Another lad at my work was called Peter Phile (pronounced as File) But I think ...

What you seem to be talking about is self-deception, i.e. the character is lying to themself. There is an interesting concept of the 'unreliable narrator', someone telling a story who we can't trust because their information or perspective appears ...

I read something on Pride and Prejudice where the author of the blog explained the lie as something the character believes to be true. It said something about Liz's lie being that she believed money to be important. I can't remember it now or find ...

I think the ‘lie’ in this case is that Lizzie is misled by others but *convinces herself* that Darcy is a nasty piece of work, and spends a significant chunk of the story acting and thinking on this basis. The conflict arises partly from the lie ...

Scarlett, What you refer here as "a lie", most authors refer to as internal / emotional conflit. An exemple: in Pride and Prejudice Liz does not want to embark on a marriage of convenience because of her principles: she believes a woman should only ...

I think it's all done to the reader. It might surprise you how many people don't know good grammar or where a full stop should be instead of a comma. (Mine is terrible). But I have been known to put a book down when it's being badly told. I've also ...

I like adding in little 'lies' in lesser characters, just snippets to give depth to those other than the MC - even having the MC questioning it themselves to have a deeper connection. I think it helps with introducing twists as well, or alluding to ...

Hijacking it all you want. I often find the books that are raved about the most are the ones that disappoint me the most.

Good blog, Scarlett. *Pssst* Hil and Sche - I didn't like My Brilliant Friend either. Someone bought me the first 3 books in the series and I've never dared tell her I didn't finish the first one. And don't even start me on Reservoir 13. My ...

Oh Hil, I'm with you on My Brilliant Friend. So glad I've found someone else who didn't like it. I wondered what was wrong with me when I didn't like a book everyone thought was fantastic. I liked the picture of Naples life in the 60s - but the plot ...

I suppose its what you mean by a lie, There are all sorts of lies, and all sorts of interpretations of them. I don't think Scrooge lived a lie, he just lost sight of something very important, and it took and it took something substantial for him to ...

Dear Scarlett, it's when your characters become willfully disobedient that I start to worry. Mind you - they always have to act (with)in character. Another way I would define what you've alluded to above is the "light and shade" of their ...

About

I am responsible for Justin Bieber as I grew him from a sea monkey. My daily routine: Get up. Be awesome. Go back to bed. I can count the amount of boyfriends I've had on one hand. If I use a calculator. I can be naughty. I mean to behave, but there were so many other options. I can resist everything except temptation and am purely here for your entertainment.
