Information
  • Are you a ...?
    Self-published author
What genre do you primarily write in?
    Sci-fi
If you write in more than one area, what is your next most favoured genre?
    Sci-fi
    Are your reading habits ...?
    Omnivorous
    Who is your favourite author(s)?
Douglas Adams, Barbara Erskine, Russel T Davies, Isaac Asimov, Mark Billingham, Jo Nesbo
And your all time favourite books? (You can change these at any time, by the way ...)
Anything by my favourite authors. I can't possibly list them all in 190 characters...
What are your working habits when you write?
    Perfectly balanced
Are you the edit-every-sentence-ten-times type, or do you prefer to let rip?
    Ten times? Why so little?
    Your ultimate writing ambition?
To be able to work full-time on creating projects, worlds and stories that people enjoy reading.
    Your worst habit?
dog-earing paperbacks? Surfing the net when I'm meant to be writing. It often starts off as research, in my defense...
Your opinion on the books industry?
It is a tough game, but everyone does their best
    Where do you write?
Anywhere, but mostly on my laptop, wherever I happen to be (it's hard in a moving car, though).
What else do you want Word Clouders to know? eg: do you have 9 cats / like paragliding / eat nothing but tinned fish / work in the bath / live in Kettering?
I discovered whilst successfully crowdfunding a book trailer for my first full-length novel that I love script-writing, and all the marketing/promotion which goes with being an indie writer. I have a play, and a short sci-fi film project coming up next!

I took a couple of courses (screenwriting and self-editing) and had some very valuable insight (paid for) from a professional author a few years ago. I haven't been active on the cloud for a while, admittedly, but I was rather shocked to discover ...

ElaineJ I self-published my first short-story collection almost two years ago, and will be releasing my first full-length novel in summer 2016. Have notes for several more novels, a short sci-fi film and a play in the works. There aren't enough hours in a day!

ElaineJ Have self-published my first short-story collection and am well on the way to finishing my first full-length novel. Have notes for a second, and an idea for a non-fiction book. Can some-one create more hours in a day, please?

Stephen Mark Fine thanks. Yes, marketing is key - but the experts suggest that facebook and twitter are not the best way of going about it...

ElaineJ Thank you Stephen! Sales of the anthology are slow, regrettably - more to do with finding the right way to promote/market and the time to do it, than the quality of the material, I hope!!! How are you getting on?

ElaineJ A-boggle with all I've learned from the Self-Edit & Screenwriting Courses - it'll take some time to digest and put it all into practice! But preparing to self-publish my first short-story collection in August, still working on 'The' novel, with ideas for another waiting in the wings...

About

EJ Jackson is the author of two science-fiction books - 'The Journey & Other Short Stories' and 'The Methuselah Paradox' - and one romance 'New Leaf'. Find out more at: www.ejjackson.org

A native of Hampshire, Elaine has loved science fiction for as long as she can remember. 'Star Trek', 'Doctor Who' and 'Captain Scarlet' were early and enduring favourites, later joined by such stalwarts as 'Blake's 7' and 'The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy' - in 1980 Elaine founded the official appreciation society for 'HHGTTG', ZZ9, which still has a healthy membership.

Elaine's next current project is 'Minding Mama', a post-apocalyptic sci-fi story. you can find out more on www.mindingmama.org

Elaine is an avid reader, and enjoys TV, movies and going to the theatre. She lives in Surrey with her husband and son

Hi, Elaine. Unfortunately not. I am not a wealthy man, there are too many demands on my meagre resources already. When I am rich and famous - a situation guaranteed by the brilliance of my as yet unpublished debut novel, I will attend on a regular basis and give you all the benefit of my wisdom and charm... :-)

    Hi Elaine,
You were wondering about the self edit course? I cannot reccomed it too highly, it was brilliant for me. The writing course may also be good, although you are obviously a very competent writer already, I am sure there is always stuff to learn. Why don't you talk to Debi or do the mini self editing course on the York Friday to check it out? The WW people might well allow you to change. Ask others, but for me it was a really important turning point.
