Hil, this - 'I didn’t know skin could break. I thought it was only bones and hearts.' Poor wee boy! You've captured his innocence and hope (and repressed hurt) with simple power. Very moving.

Daeds, that's a brilliant comp entry - the way the indoctrinated mind justifies anything in front of it so that it fits the internal programming. A great story and a lot in such a short space.

Oh Raine. You've done it again. Such yearning in her self delusion. This is so poignant and heart wrenching. Beautifully awful.

See you were all talking about York a few months back. I was there last year. And two years before that. Love the feeling of belonging to a community there. Anybody going back for 2018?

Watching the BBC4 Simon Sebag Montifiore History of Spain, I jumped up and down when he got to Cordoba and realised just how clever your story is in "Something Rich and Strange". I adored "Samsara" in "Seeming Glass" , a cracking short story, but "Speaking the Girls" is surely worthy of a complete novel? And that's a compliment. I want more. Brilliant.
