    Some self-editing

EmmaD And, frankly, if you get another request for the full towards the end of the two weeks exclusive, I doubt if I'd stick to the letter of it... The first agent's been incredibly lucky that you gave them that time, possibly against your own best interests; they're still ahead of anyone else, for now, and this is business.

Raine But what do I say if another (haha) comes back requesting a full within that two week period?

Squidge Yes. Deffo. If another comes back to say yes in that time, tell them what you've agreed and that you'll get back to them after two weeks, because then you can start playing them off against each other xx

EmmaD Exciting. But don't forget that exclusivity serves them, but not you. Why should you give it? I would say, not more than a week.

EmmaD If they want it, the fact that other agents are reading it won't stop them wanting it.

Raine Thanks! They replied 24 hrs after I subbed, so the chances of another getting back within 2 weeks is slim, but it makes me feel a bit jumpy.

Daedalus You can put a proportion down to Emma's book doctoring. I suggest 15% if Emma's happy with that. The rest is your prodigious talent

Athelstone It's a fabulous story and that has been spotted by an agent (and all of us mortals who read it on the way) wanting to do stuff in a two week window. I kind of agree with Emma. Give them one.

J.net Well done Raine! I would say, yes, BU-UT if someone else asks for full, contact the first agent and tell them they must hurry as others are waiting. Also tell others that they are in a queue - that should focus their attention!

EmmaD One more excited thought - if during or at the end of the exclusive period, this agent comes back and offers representation, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SAY YES STRAIGHT AWAY. That really, really isn't in your interests. Agents can read extremely fast when they want to - so do everything you can to get feedback from any other interested agents. Some who have mixed feelings may say "Well, if you've been offered representations, that's great news, and I'll bow out", but others who are really interested will read in bed and on the bus in order to find out if they want it.

Raine, so glad you are continuing your quest. It's my first time at this kind of event in York, but I was there for the other March festival. Hoping to link up with many there. Do say hello, I'd be happy to chat. It is sometimes an uphill struggle, ...

Daeds - I didn't know that about Jude the Obscure! How very bizarre, and yes to read it expecting titillation is not quite the right frame of mind in which to appreciate it, I'd guess. And that's a mess of a sentence if ever there was one. I ...

Zeno did not deserve you. Talent and graft will out, and you have both in spades. The rest is luck. You have just had a run of the bad stuff. You'll find a much better agent and look back on this and realise it was a lucky escape. It's just a ...

Funny thing is, when people say things like that, it's only natural to feel a little wary when you do go to the wardrobe later this evening....

There's probably a word for that anticipation somewhere.

    Scratches chin.

Two members of the secret society jump to defend the blandness of the reality.

Will I get a phone call in the next 5 minutes? A knock on the door? A hooded figure at midnight roaming my street?

    There's a whole novel here!
